Custom End Mill: A Quick RFQ Guide (What to Send, What to Expect)

March 31, 20266 min readBy Solid Carbide Direct
Custom carbide ball end mills for mould industry machining

A custom end mill is easiest to quote when the geometry and application are defined. Use this checklist to shorten the quote-to-first-article cycle and improve first-pass success.

If you are ordering a custom end mill, the goal is usually to solve a clearance, reach, or profile issue that catalogue tools cannot. The fastest quotes happen when the RFQ includes both the geometry and the cut conditions—so the grinder can choose flute form, edge prep, and coating that match your material.

RFQ Checklist for a Custom End Mill

  • Diameter, LOC, OAL, and shank diameter; any neck relief dimensions.
  • Tool type: square, corner radius, ball nose, tapered, or profile.
  • Material + hardness and whether the cut is roughing or finishing.
  • Tolerance targets and surface finish requirements.
  • Coolant strategy and spindle runout expectations.
Send your custom end mill drawing and material.
